3 design trends that are giving me the ick // by michele
There are a few things that really stand out to me when I walk into a space. Sometimes it is beautiful, natural light, stunning art, or even unique antique pieces. Other things grab my attention and NOT in a good way. They give me what my kids like to refer to as "the ick." These are the things that inspire me to shop, change, or remedy. Here are my top 3 right now:
rugs that are too small: this is one thing that stands our immediately when I walk into a space. Ideally, you want your rug to fill the space with 6-8” between the perimeter and the wall. Small rugs are actually making your space feel smaller and incomplete. Here is a great graphic with some guidelines by Martine Claessens.
2. brushed nickel: so sorry if you have this in your home! This is one things that is affordable and can be such an easy thing to upgrade! My favorite swaps are brass, polished nickel, and sometimes- rare, but I do use it occasionally- chrome.
3. art that is too high: this one can be a little tricky depending on the height of the person hanging. generally, I like the middle of the art to be eye level. a good rule of thumb is that the middle of the piece should be around 60” off the ground
What are your biggest design icks? We’d love to know!
news from around the office
June and July have been so full! We have been logging a lot of hours in the car together, visiting you all, seeing your new projects, and installing beautiful pieces. The first half of the month was full of installs and collecting measurements. Seeing a space come to life from small samples of fabric and wallpaper, will never get old. We’ve been to Ellijay, Lake Oconee, and Serenbe this month measuring and drawing up plans for renovation projects we are stoked about.
Maggie has been traveling with family and finishing up our library reorganization project. Bella, Michele’s daughter, also spent a lot of time with us in the office, helping out and organizing. We love having their youthful spirit around! It’s so nice to see everything put away perfectly, and is making design presentations so much easier!
Michele was traveling a little bit in June, finishing up spring sports with her kids. She’s also enjoyed some down time with close friends who came to Atlanta for the weekend. It's so fun to see Atlanta through a visitors lens. She recently enjoyed spending time in one of her favorite cities, Charleston for the 4th and also enjoyed cooler temps in central Ny with family as well. She is looking forward to a girls trip with college friends at the end of August more for one last hurrah before school kicks into full swing!
Erin was working a bit from the beach in June, which was a lovely change of scenery. She finalized all big wedding vendors and just took engagement pictures! Now for the fun stuff! She’s loving the sunny days and loves seeing you all when she’s out and about!
We hope you all had a restful June and July! Hope to see you soon, but in the mean time, connect with us on Instagram!
3 houseplants you can keep alive //by erin
I was still teaching when the world shut down in 2020. I was working 12-16 hour days lesson planning, grading, and teaching via zoom. It was a crazy time to be a teacher. One of my fondest memories from that time at home was taking breaks on my porch with a brand new plant that was thriving and a relaxing rocker.
I started buying plants once the world started opening a little bit more in April of 2020. I bought a Satin Pothos for my porch that was gorgeous and growing like a weed! It gave me the confidence to bring some plants inside too. These are the plants that I’ve had luck with year round, and anyone can keep alive- even Michele.
Any Pothos Plant: The MVP
They communicate: when they need water, they droop and look dry. When they are overwatered, you’ll see brown spots. When they grow only on one side, they need more balanced sun. They react to nearly every stimulus, so if you pay attention, you’ll be able to care for it!
Easy to propagate: Once you have a thriving plant, it can be nice to take clippings for friends, gifts, or even just to make your plant fuller! These are the easiest to propagate. You just cut below the node, and keep in water until the roots sprout. I know lots of people who keep clippings in a vase and let the plant live in there permanently. Just make sure to keep the water clean!
Low Light Lovers: I don’t get any direct natural light, so this was key. They love low light places and do very well. They do grow more and love the light, but I have had great luck with them in shadier spaces.
Variation: These plants have lots of different variations. The first one I had was a satin pothos. That is my personal favorite, but find the leaves you love and add interest to your space! There are a ton of options available!
Snake Plant: Your chillest friend
Chillin’ in the Dark: By far the most relaxed plant I’ve ever had. I have put this plant in an interior bathroom with no light, and it continued to live it’s best life. This is the plant I turn to for all of the spaces in my house that do not get any light or consistent light.
Basically a Cactus: I have one of these right now, and have had it for several months, and I cannot tell you the last time I even thought about watering it until right now. They don’t need much water at all which makes it the perfect plant for busy people!
Dust Busters: A huge perk for these guys are their air purifying qualities. Snake plants are ideal for bedrooms because they release a lot of oxygen and moisture to the air, decreasing the impact of allergens. According to NASA, this plant is so effective, it only takes between 6-8 of them to produce enough oxygen for a sealed room.
Aloe Vera: A multipurpose gal
Aloe Properties: Obviously, aloe has so many other properties that make them handy around the house. I keep some in my kitchen for inevitable burns, I’ve made my own sunburn relief, and have even seen some recipes that call for aloe.
Tolerant: Aloe plants don’t need a ton of water. What I appreciate about them is that they let you know when they need more. They don’t look as full and sometimes can start to droop. If everything is still standing and plump, you’re good to go!
Chic: In the right vessel, these can look really interesting and fun in your home. To make a statement, plant several in one pot for a fuller looking piece on a shelf or table!
Plants can be such mood boosters to a space. The ones I’ve listed here are like having the easiest pets in the world: you still get to love them and watch them grow, but without all of the vet bills. What do you think? What are some of your favorite houseplants? Let us know!
